Book Review: A compelling Holocaust account
Summary: 5 Stars
There is no doubt that this is one of the most compelling holocaust volumes that I have come across. I'm sure that of the memoirs that appear from time to time,each account is different and opens up a new insight into the atrocities that were that were part of western civilisation(?)The book is eminently readable, due to a fine translation from the hebrew, which,in terms of some of the vocabulary and syntax, seems to have the American reader in mind. However, this will be one of those books that I will always keep. The style of the book, with the narrative moving around in time from the war to Poland in the fifties during that uncertain period of post war communism, makes it even more "nonputdownable". The references to Polish antisemitism present a picture of a devout Catholic nation caught up in the mire of atrocities. What would Poland have been like if there had been no war, no extermination? This is a particularly relevant as it was Poland that gave the Jews a "home", where for for hundreds of years they thrived.Frister was also quick to point out the cruelty meeted out by his fellow Jews and his own "rape" was committed by one of his own people. The author brings us close to those he loved and cared for and one could not help but feel sorry for those he left behind or who tragically died. You could do worse than buy this book. It is one of the most moving memoirs that I have ever read. I commend it to anyone with feelings towards the end of human suffering at the hands of our fellow man.
