Book Reviews of Tao Te ChingBook Review: For those seeking the truth. Summary: 5 Stars
To translate work that transcends what is and what is not, is not a simple task. Stephen does a good job. This book gave me salvation when I needed it most.
Book Review: Freedom Summary: 5 Stars
I found the book in audio form first (read by the author), by accident, when I was working at a demeaning factory job, seeing first-hand the real, impoverishing results of a market-driven economy. I was also a member of a very strong Christian church at the time, and had been for years, having served a mission for that church. Quite simply, the philosophy set forth in this book broke the chains of blood and subservience with which I felt bound by the "Christian" experiences I had had throughout my life. The text, reinterpreted as Mitchell says, helped me see into the soul of Taoism, while also inspiring me to dig into other literal translations, and from there a step-by-step discovery of the Taoist texts that followed Lao-Tsu's little gem of humanity and compassion.
Book Review: GREAT INTERPRETATION Summary: 5 Stars
I THINK THIS IS A GREAT INTERPRETATION OF "THE WAY" AND "TAO." IT'S SIMPLE...DIRECT....AND NOT "I'M GOING TO USE BIG WORDS TO MAKE YOU THINK I'M SMART". JUST PLAIN, SIMPLE, DIRECT ENGLISH TRANSLATION. THIS BOOK WILL TEACH YOU A LOT ABOUT WISDOM, PSYCHOLOGY, AND OBSERVANCES IN EVERYTHING FROM WORK, TO RELIGION, AND ESPECIALLY EVERYDAY LIFE! IT'S ALMOST LIKE IT CONNECTS YOU WITH YOUR FIRST INSTINCTS ON THINGS. I RECCOMMEND THAT YOU BUY THIS.
Book Review: Gideon version of Chinese Spiritual Treasure Summary: 4 Stars
Stephen Mitchell's original translation of the Tao Te Ching is a good place to start an investigation of Taoist philosophy for the billions of us so unfortunate as to be unable to read Chinese. This is my second favorite English translation behind that of Gia Fu Feng and Jane English (and I have sampled or read quite a few). The size (31/2"X5"X1/2") allows me to carry it any where to be used as a guide for meditation.
Book Review: Good Poetry, Bad translation Summary: 2 Stars
This "translation" is good poetry and nice to read but as a translation of a book of wisdom it has lost most of its value. It is now a highly interpreted Tao Te Ching. It has lost its authenticity. It is like taking the Bible and highly editing it. Anyway, I have read at least two other translations which I found much better because they leave the interpretation to the reader. These books have footnotes with author's helpful notes, etc.
