Book Review: Teach Me More Chinese
Summary: 4 Stars
As the title suggests, this is a follow-on to "Teach me Chinese" which I have also bought to introduce Mandarin Chinese to my 3-year old toddler. The idea behind these books is great - to teach kids Chinese through songs. Both books/tapes (we actually have the CD versions, which makes it much easier to find your favourite songs) contain a collection of well-known songs sung in both English and Chinese so kids understand what they're singing about. The book has all the words in English and pinyin(and some Chinese characters, but not all) and is presented as a colouring book (not that I would let my toddler near it with crayons!)My only complaints about this excellent format are:
a) the songs are "American-ised" rather than the English versions that most UK people would recognise (e.g. "Wheels on the car" rather than "Wheels on the bus"), which is fair enough for an American publication!
b) some of the songs don't scan very easily and/or have been translated using more complicated words and phrases that I think are strictly necessary, particularly for children.
"Teach me Chinese" is easier to follow (bigger pictures, easier songs in general) than "Teach me More Chinese" if you want to know where to start.
