Book Reviews of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

Book Review: This book delivers!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am using this book with my 5 year old twin boys. We are sailing along and the boys love it!! They feel so proud when they read the "stories". We cover the accompanying picture until after they have read the sentences. They get excited about taking my hand away from the picture after they have read about it. We homeschool and this book gives me all the confidence I was searching for in my endeavor to teach reading. Great book. It WORKS!!!

Book Review: Balanced approach
Summary: 5 Stars

I am teaching our 3 1/2 year old to read using this book, and it is extremely effective. While it is based on phonics, it also introduces irregular words as sight words. It does use a special type of writing to express different sounds (i.e. the sound "th" is written with the letters connected,) however, the transition to regular writing is begun around lesson 75, so a child finishing the book would not be confused in a regular classroom. My daughter has little problem recognizing the sounds in her other books without the special writing, even now (on lesson 40.) While we do have days that she struggles to concentrate, she often begs to do "homeschool" with the book. I might hesitate to use this book with a child younger than 4 if he/she didn't have a really good attention span--there have been days when I wondered if our 3 1/2 y.o. wasn't too young. Very well thought-out approach, it meticulously lays the foundation for future skills.

Book Review: Excellent - I taught my two kids before they were 5!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is a great easy way to teach your kids to read. The method gives the kids a solid foundation to learn new words easily. By the time you finish the lessons kids are reading at the 2nd grade level. Because of this book, both my kids skipped a grade!

Book Review: If you think your child can't read, buy this book
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is simply incredible. We used it to teach our two daughters to read when each was at the age of 5, and this was no small task. I would especially recommend it to you if your child has been labeled as "dyslexic" or if you have been given other medical-sounding reasons why your child cannot read. The book is a systematic, logical sequence of lessons that allow almost any child to succeed time after time. And when you're done with the book, your child is reading!

Book Review: outstanding guide
Summary: 5 Stars

My son turned 4 last August. In September I purchased Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I am taking the time to write a review of this book because it was another parent's review that encouraged me to take the chance that a $15-20 book would provide the tools to effectively teach my child to read. It worked. It worked better than I could've imagined. We completed the book in a little over 4 months. A couple of notes about the book. The intro is excellent; it explains why the DISTAR method works. There are explicit, detailed instructions for the teacher (parent). On the down side, the list of books (located at the end of the book) that the authors recommend for further reading are quite dated and frankly too simple. Books like Cat in the Hat are more appropriate. My interest in teaching my son to read stemmed from my desire to increase his self-confidence. The big hugs and smiles I get when he successfully completes a new book are what parenting is all about.
