Book Review: A good beginning

I bought this pack a few months before coming to the Netherlands and with a lot of diligence and on again, off again help from a native speaker, I managed to end up speaking some sort of intelligible Dutch. I thought that was pretty amazing, considering that I had also tried TY Russian, German, and Swedish and in all three cases I ended up nowhere.
What really amazed me about TY Dutch is that real-live people actually said the things that were on the tapes and in the book. In fact, I would burst into laughter every time I heard someone use one of the fixed expressions, just because I was so tickled that they were real. The material that the author addresses is very practical and she gives you a good (though perhaps not altogether too substantial) basic vocabulary by the time you finish the book. The grammar was clearly laid out and explained. In fact it sometimes transpires that my grammar is better than that of native Dutch speakers.
I never had the impression that lessons progressed too quickly, as is the case with some of the other TY books. This pack will give you an excellent platform to build on; you will be able to cope with everyday situations and probably puzzle out a newspaper and conduct a decent conversation on "soft" topics like weather, your job, and tourist attractions.
