Book Reviews of Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Day of Humor, Healing and Hope in My Life as an Animal Surgeon

Book Review: Wish it was longer
Summary: 5 Stars

The is the first time I've written a review and it's because this is such a damn good book.

Vet visits can be such a stressful time for both financial and emotional reasons. This book has given me such a better understanding of what's happening behind the scenes as well as the multitude of issues a veterinarian is juggling. This book will make your future vet visits something to look forward too or at least much less stressful. (And as a greyhound owner the story of "Fly" was priceless.)

If you love the real-life medical stories I guarantee you'll love this. Plenty of medical detail but not a text. Hilarious stories about a variety of animals. My only criticism is that the damn thing ended.

Book Review: Dog lovers opinion
Summary: 4 Stars

Very interesting view of a day in the life of a vet. Seemed like a very long day, but if he could take it so could I.

Book Review: This should be required reading for people owned by pets...
Summary: 5 Stars

Only those that work in the veterinary field know the joys and agony that can happen numerous times in a single day, if not in a single minute. We may have to euthanize an elderly patient that we all care deeply and are heartbroken at their passing then turn around and vaccinate a new puppy or kitten for someone and act like we are so happy to see them! Pet owners really don't have a clue. There is no wonder that those in the veterinary fields have a suicide rate that is 4 times the national norm. Think about that for a second....

Those of us that do this stuff day in and day out really wish that "normal people" had even slightest clue as to what we do, every day. Many of us have "warped" senses of humor that we wield like a sword to protect ourselves from running, screaming down the street, never to be seen again.

Dr. Nick Trout does an excellent job of trying to get all of these things across to the masses. We are going to feature his book in our new newsletter because his memoirs really tell it like it happens.

This is one of the best books on the subject and again, it should be required reading for anyone that shares their lives with animals.

Book Review: Verbose
Summary: 3 Stars

By the middle of this book I was fairly irritated by the wordy, bitchy, melodramatic way the author presented his patients' owners. I also would liked to have seen more clinical encounters (with pictures!) and fewer anecdotes.

Book Review: Tell Me Where It Hurts
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book when it was reviewed in our local paper and I saw the front cover. I have a Boston Terrier that looked just like that poor little guy when I took him to see his vet not long ago. He felt so bad he didn't even greet his favorite vet the way he usually does. I had to have that picture so I took the book along with it. What an enjoyable writer Dr. Trout is. He should write more and maybe even fiction. It's truly one of those can't put down stories of real life people who try to make life better for others. My dream as a young girl was to become a veterinarian, but in those days women weren't encouraged to even go to college, let alone into a career such as that. It pleases me that today most new vets are women.
