Book Reviews of Terminal

Book Review: What would you do if you were Tommy...
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this one in a 24 hour span. If I didn't have to work, eat and sleep, I would have read it in a matter of a few hours. I love Brian Keene's writing style, and he outdid himself on this book. It was brutally honest, very descriptive, and made me step back and ponder how I would handle that situation.

It is nothing like his zombie books, which were also wonderful. This book showcases his diversity as a writer, and it is a page turner.

Not for the easily depressed, however. lol! The subject is the gloomiest I've read in a while, but it stays with you after finishing and really makes you think. How many of you would do the same thing in Tommy's place?

Highly recommended.

Book Review: excellent suspense/crime novel
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a shame that this book is not getting more publicity. While Keene's excellent zombie novel "The Rising" was a major hit that could be found at most bookstores, this one is a bit harder to find...but it is well worth the effort. While I loved "The Rising," "Terminal" is even better and shows off a more mature writing style. It's not really horror, more of a crime story that has supernatural elements that creep in at the end (but never overpower the human drama). I cannot recommend this one enough. Check it out.

Book Review: exciting suspense thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

Like many living in Hanover, an industrial ghost town, ailing Tommy O'Brien has no health insurance so he delays visiting the doctor until his wife Michelle insists that he goes following two weeks of intense headaches and a major weight loss. The doctor informs Tommy that he suffers grade four-cancer so serious and aggressive that there is no treatment and he will die in one to three months. Stunned and worried about the welfare of his wife and their son T.J. after he goes, Tommy and his two best friends Sherm and John discuss robbing a bank while drinking beer at Murphy's Place.

The bank robbery goes wrong, but the three thieves have hostages. One oft he prisoners, the boy Benjy, apparently has mystical healing powers and miraculously Tommy is cured and his crony shot in the stomach recovers immediately. However, Tommy and his pals will soon learn the extent of Benjy's healing even as they are arrested.

TERMINAL is an exciting suspense thriller starring a "condemned" man whose philosophy is "life's a bit*h and then you die". The story line is action-packed, but contains an intriguing paranormal twist that takes a fabulous final Twilight Zone spin. Readers will agree that money can buy you health as those without put off until it is too late. This is a keen tale that the audience will appreciate.

Book Review: how many times, brian keene?
Summary: 2 Stars

first off, this book was pretty compelling. the plot was great because it kept you wondering what would happen.
i did enjoy it, and, to all the people who want to read it, but haven't, go for it! i would say 3 or even 4 stars out of 5.
and i won't talk about the ending, i don't want to spoil it for anyone.

however one this is nagging me, IMMENSELY.
how many freaking times do you have to write over and over... "i have cancer, growing at an alarming rate"?!?!?!
HOW MANY!?? i should have counted. the whole "growing at an alarming rate" was thrown in there dozens of times that it made me annoyed,
so badly annoyed that i nearly put the book down. but i can't ever read a book half-way, so i pushed myself.
but God that about ruined it for me. it was like mr. keene wanted to remind all the readers out there that had suffered from amnesia.

i understand this is one of his earlier books. or maybe not? 2005?
i've read all of his other books, and some are just hit-or-misses for me.
i would HIGHLY recommend his "zombie series" as i call it; The Rising, City of the Dead, Dead Sea.
fantastic zombies novels and probably the most brutal i've EVER read out of any novels (sans from the gripping reality of the book, Z).

you live and you learn, maybe brian keene would change Terminal a few times,
but if he ever did a re-release, just please, for the love of all that is holy... take out that darned phrase!!!

Book Review: powerful...
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, this is not horror in the sense of zombies, vampires, ghosts, etc. It's horror in one of my favorite ways - ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, with a sprinkle of supernatural pixie dust. Keene amazed me with his short stories, stunned me with his zombies, and now leaves me breathless with his thriller.

The only word I can come up with - and I've been chewing on this for days - is POWERFUL. This story is absolutely powerful. From the humble beginnings to the insanity of the heist gone wrong, this story will touch your heart, and attack your senses. The characters are so familiar, without being stereotypical, that you begin to expect them to behave like the people in your life you are comparing them to. When they don't, you find yourself somewhere between disappointed and relieved. And any time a writer can make me wonder if I feel one way or another they have succeeded in getting their story off the page and into my head - right where they wanted to be!

The depth of the plot and characters, combined with the reality of the atmosphere, brings this tale to life in a symbiotic union of perfection. Crescendo like pacing is expertly crafted to take you through a gamut of emotions you don't normally experience in horror - and you find yourself pleasantly surprised. Keene's style of writing only fine tunes the intensity of this novel with smooth prose and precision dialogue. There are no wasted images, thoughts, or otherwise here - and to think the novella was missing thirty odd thousand words!

All the elements blend seamlessly and come together in an ending that will madden you on some levels, yet appease you on others. Underlying social questions are redefined and exceptions to the rules of ethics are introduced. You find that the moral of the story is... well no, it's more like... but then again it could be... Yes, that is exactly what I was doing while reading the end!! It twisted and turned so many times at the end I was dizzy, and happy to spin some more. My recommendation? Purchase your lifetime pass to Keene's merry-go-round and do it now!! Five stars
