Book Review: Eerily prophetic, a masterful piece

David Barsamian is a totally unique and incredibly effective interviewer. He is able to bring out a conversational style in academic experts (Noam Chomsky, Edward Said, Howard Zinn...) which allows theyre arguments to be understood in a way often much clearer than simply reading books written in a more traditional way.Interviewed here by Barsamian, Ahmad speaks on many aspects of Islamic culture, including the conflict over Kashmir as well as discussions on the subject of terrorism - that committed by the West as well as the issue of Islamic-fundamentalist terrorism and Osama bin Laden. What makes this text to remarkable is that the interview was conducted in 1999. In perhaps the most memorable passage of the book, Barsamian asks Ahmad for his advice on what should be done about bin Laden (this was not long after the 1998 WTC bombing). Ahmad's reccomendations - and those of many other experts on the Middle East were totally ignored.
This text illustrates with remarkable clarity the danger of inaction, or incorrect action in response to terrorism. It is fantastically prophetic, and an extremely enlightening book to read.
