'Tethered' is a unique novel, quirky and heavy, an offbeat and hauntingly poetic story about an undertaker, her work, and the hard-won shell she uses to keep herself distant from everyone around her. She seems clinical and cold, and yet she lights a candle and plays peaceful music for each of the dead, choosing a flower for each depending on the meaning of the flower and the life of the person who has passed.
When Clara, the undertaker, discovers a little girl hanging around the mortuary, she is struck by the girl's similarities to herself. She learns disturbing things about the little girl's life that hearken back to Clara's own troubled past, to her own demons. What follows is both a mystery and a journey into Clara's own heart of darkness, told in beautiful language and striking turns of phrase.
A little mystery, a thoughtful and intricate story, characters with depth, and heartbreakingly beautiful writing make 'Tethered' a novel well worth reading, and Amy MacKinnon an author worth watching.
