Book Review: A Beautiful Girl with a Huge Scythe: (Bloody) Action-Paced Comic

"Tetragrammaton Labyrinth" is an occult action comic by Ei Itou, about a gun-toting nun Margaret Cross fighting evil with her partner Angela, a beautiful young girl with a big scythe. The comic's original Japanese title is "Danzaisha Tetragrammaton Labyrinth" - "danzaisha" meaning "those who punish (or condemn) sin" - but the comic focuses on bloody actions, and any religious references serve only as background to explain the history of two heroines.
Set in the alternate London, perhaps before Industrial Revolution, the manga follows the blood-soaked battles of two heroines Margaret (also knows as Sister Meg) and Angela, fighting the demons that terrorize the dark streets of the city. Not much is explained in this volume about them, except that one's fate is mysteriously linked to the other's, and no matter what happens to her body, Angela cannot die. She takes that as a curse, but of what nature is yet to be revealed.
Artwork by Ito is fine, especially two beautiful heroines, but as one of the previous reviewers said, the comic is not for everyone, including some decapitations and severed limbs. Violence is discreetly presented and stylized, but it is definitely there, like Tim Burton's rendition of "Sleepy Hollow." My complaint has more to do with the rather predictable story of each episode, and lack of descriptions of two girls' daily activities when not engaged in battles. All battle and little character development may be good to grab the reader's attention quickly, but it soon becomes boring, getting repetitious.
"Tetragrammaton Labyrinth" (complete in six volumes) was serialized in "Comic Gum" published by Wani Books 2005 through 2007. The magazine is famous for long-running series "Battle Vixens," but don't expect any fan services here (at least in this volume). Though one of the heroines may be seen dressed in goth-loli costumes, what she does is pretty violent.
Not exactly my cup of tea, but the comic is worth reading for its interesting heroines.
