Book Review: A Blast From the Past

Sarah Dessen exposes you to a slow paced novel that keeps you thinking. She shows you how to deal with the sorrow in your life and what to do when you feel you have lost something. In That Summer 15-year-old Haven tries to learn how to accept herself and the world around her. However she can't get past the fact that she's five-foot-eleven and still growing and doesn't seem to fit into the world.
Throughout the summer Haven feels all the loved ones around her are slipping away. Her dad just got remarried to Lorna Queen, the "weather pet", and seems to be forgetting his previous life including all of the good times they had. Her mom seems to have turned into the twin of there odd neighbor Lydia Catrell and is always listening to Barry Manilow or off at some singles club. Havens best friend Casey, just came back from camp and has turned boy crazy and doesn't seem to understand Haven anymore. Her sister Ashley is about to marry boring Lewis and is taking the power of being the bride a little to far. Haven feels lonely and lost with no one around to really understand her.
Suddenly Ashley's ex-boyfriend Sumner Lee begins appearing everywhere and comes in at the perfect time. Sumner really understands Haven and always knows how to make her laugh. The sudden reappearance by Sumner brings back old memories of Virginia Beach when life seemed perfect and she can't figure out why Ashley ever dumped him. She starts to see him frequently and all of the good times she had with Sumner and her family start to come flooding back which makes Haven as confused as ever.
That Summer is a well-written book that keeps you interested throughout. It is very slow-paced but it gives you the momentum to keep reading. Sarah Dessen really gives you the freedom to explore the characters joy and sorrow. There is a lot to think about with the weddings, Sumner, and all of the craziness. Haven finally comes to peace with the past and gets ready to encounter the future.
