Book Reviews of The 80/10/10 DietBook Review: 811 Summary: 5 Stars
Very good book. I found it to be loaded full of information. I have been vegitarian/vegan for a little over a year now but wasn't quite feeling like I thought I should. After reading this book I feel that I have better knowledge and understanding of how much food affects us. I've read most of the reviews and could see both sides of the issues. I feel that after reading the entire book the "negative" readers did not finish the book as I was pretty skeptic thoughout the beginning of the book. I have yet to try completly eating this diet, but I've been ramping up to "covert" over doing about 2 of my 3 meals a day in the 811 format. I will be ordering Dr. Grahms "cook" book very shortly.
Book Review: A True Must Read Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very interesting book, and I am extremely glad it has been written. The strange sounding title refers to the name of an eating plan that derives 80% of total calories from carbs as found in fruit, and 10% each from fat and protein, and does so within a raw vegan framework. Graham's opinion is that this is the optimum and natural diet for human beings and therein lies the premise of this book, and he spends the next 300+ pages convincing the reader why this is so.
To accomplish this, Graham uses mostly common sense arguments and scientific analyses. The former are more effective here, and he peppers the text liberally with them. The combination is a very convincing mix, and I felt ready to dive into a pit of bananas before I had read too far. By the time Graham describes how eating a high-fat diet stresses the adrenals I was both fascinated and reflecting in horror on my past dietary sins.
There are 348 pages here; 170 of them are essay in chapters, and the balance goes to sample menus, nutrient breakdowns, portion equivalents, testimonials, faqs, and so on. These miscellaneous parts do not come across as filler, even the perhaps overly lengthy testimonial section. Graham's writing style is clear and though he engages in repetition at times (for instance when talking about fat and blood sugar) the flow is mainly undisturbed. The end feeling I had was that it was very intelligently laid out and well done. I also appreciate that he doesn't try to sell you anything. (see "The PH Miracle" for an example of that!)
I really don't have much to criticize here, I did wonder what stripe of doctor "Dr." Graham is, and some of the menu plans (dinners) seemed a bit complex to coexist with a "mono is best" philosophy. He cites some vague and trivial sources ("a 1999 journal article says..." and "according to a brochure from the Colorado Vegetarian Society..."), and I was left wondering why Dr. Graham recommends eating any "overt" fat at all (given that sweet fruits and greens naturally contain 5% fat). He never gave a reason. Also, he says to eat juicy fruit for breakfast, sweeter fruit for lunch, and I remember something about acid fruits at dinner. Again, he never gave a reason for this. Very minor things in the broader context. I would overlook a great deal more to get to the profoundly worthwhile message of this book.
I guess the most compelling thing about this book is that by the end, the diet proposed within seems like a no big deal, normal, almost. It's like a secret hiding in plain sight. That's amazing considering how truly rare it is to eat in such a way. Go out into the world and you will see it is borderline revolutionary. I have applied these principles and experienced nothing but positive results for myself- If it were not so I would never write such a review. I must say thanks to Dr. Graham for putting this out there for everyone to benefit from.
Note: I don't know what the deal is with the 4-6 weeks Amazon takes to ship it, I bought mine from [...] because of that.
Book Review: A Wonderful Way of Eating, But Transition Gradually Summary: 5 Stars
The 80/10/10 dietary lifestyle is a simple way of eating that can radically and positively transform one's health and attitude. I've experienced it myself. Some reviews claim that the diet is based on "bad science," but perhaps that's because scientific research is not currently geared toward prevention.
I've used myself as a guinea pig, and my husband has done the same. We've both been raw vegans for several years and our health has steadily improved. After trying the 80/10/10 lifestyle, that improvement went to hyper-speed. We are middle-aged, and we looked and felt like twenty-somethings.
After about four months of eating 80/10/10, we moved and started new jobs. With the added stress, we found ourselves craving fats, and we gave in to the cravings. We're still in excellent health and are still raw vegans, but we don't look as spectacular as we did a year ago! We hope to be able to return to the 80/10/10 lifestyle as we adjust to our new surroundings and responsibilities.
If you do buy this book and are convinced by the text to try the 80/10/10 way of eating, our advice is to go slowly. It's really a lifestyle shift, rather than a diet, and if you go in with that mindset, you're less likely to fall off of it during times of stress. It can be easy to become compulsive and set yourself up for internal battles if you limit yourself too much, too soon. You can begin with an awareness that fresh fruits are the best choice at any time and just start to notice when you make other choices. Observing yourself gives you good baseline data and helps you figure out emotional triggers for eating certain types of food. Working this out while you're transitioning is a lot easier than switching to the lifestyle first and fighting with yourself later.
I'd love to see Dr. Graham or another 80/10/10 adherent write a new book about the process of transitioning to this lifestyle. I highly recommend The 80/10/10 Diet. If we all ate this way, we could eradicate disease and despair in short order. Just make the shift slow and easy.
Book Review: A life changing book Summary: 5 Stars
This book makes so much sense to humans who have only been cooking food for about 10,000 years out of our hundreds of thousands of years in existence. Our society is in so much trouble today, health-wise, and going back to our "Garden of Eden" diet just makes a person feel really great. Graham also makes you feel so much better with the transistion that he says could take as long as 2 years to switch 100 percent to the 80/10/10 diet.
Book Review: A true inspiration! Summary: 5 Stars
After reading the 80-10-10 diet, I'm the healthiest and happiest I've ever been. I used to restrict what I ate, especially fruit. I was high-fat raw without knowing it. I was always hungry, and couldn't sleep. After being inspired by 80-10-10, now, I eat SOOO much food! I love 80-10-10!! People always say, "wow, you are going to eat ALL of that?" And I do. And more. I am never hungry, in fact, I'm always full. Usually I'm stuffed, lol! And, I'm losing weight! I lost 30 total pounds and am the most confident I've ever been because of it. I'm able to run faster and further than ever before. I recover much faster after intense workouts. I no longer need glasses/contacts. My skin and allergies have improved dramatically to the point where I no longer need to take medication for either. Healthy eating has so many fantastic and broad reaching consequences. The recipes in this book are so delicious. I never feel guilty about eating anymore! I just eat whenever I'm hungry. Sometimes I even eat just because the fruit looks good lol. It's incredible. It's really liberating. I weigh less now than when I was basically fasting everyday, and I had to sleep all the time because I was so weak. And now, on 80-10-10, I'm never hungry and I always have incredible energy. It's insane. I never believed a diet could do that. 80-10-10 is the opposite of a traditional diet. Traditional diets are about restriction. 80-10-10 is about abundance. And I really love it. I highly recommend this book. It is a true inspiration!
