Book Reviews of The 80/10/10 DietBook Review: Hypoglycemia Summary: 1 Stars
I read the book two years and dug into this diet with gusto. At first, I felt fantastic -- lost more weight than I needed to, felt energetic, skin looked great, etc. Over time, I developed what I now realize was hypoglycemia, resulting in an inability to sleep at night, irritability, unstable energy levels, brain fog, etc. At first, I thought it was a cleansing reaction. But, after 1.5 years, I now know it was due to the ingestion of mass quantities of raw fruit. I also suffered from severely dry skin due to the near total absence of fat in my diet. I kept trying to make the diet work for me despite increasing exhaustion, inability to concentrate and a strong sense of malaise. I thought for sure I must have a thyroid problem, but tests proved otherwise. FINALLY, I took a leap of faith and began increasing the fats (primarly coconut oil and butter) and proteins (fish, turkey and chicken) in my diet (particularly breakfast) and immediately began feeling better. My skin is softer and more supple, my hair thicker, my energy more stable, my moods much more pleasant, etc. I still feel I am recovering from this diet as my sleeping woes have not completely vanished (though they are greatly improved) and my digestion is somewhat impaired as my system didn't have to digest much of anything for so long.
In summary, I feel this diet is great as a temporary cleanse. But, it is potentially damaging if attempted as a permanent lifestyle change. The notion that this diet can nourish a physically active person for a lifetime is absurd. I especially regret following the diet while pregnant and breastfeeding. Though my son is healthy, he has several food intolerances and I struggled with a low milk supply that improved once I added more protein to my diet. Bottom line -- tread carefully and be aware that you will develop nutritional deficiencies on this diet.
Book Review: I can't measure the praise I have for Dr. Doug Graham Summary: 5 Stars
Dr. Graham's 80/10/10 program is the most intelligent and healthy approach to the vegan lifestyle I have ever practiced. I wish I had discovered this marvelous and very important book sooner than I had. I have been recommending it to so many for over a year now and can't believe I have failed to review it until now. I realize this is more a testimony than a book review but I feel it is important to share the positive impact the 80/10/10 Diet has had on my life.
I have been a vegan for almost 30 years now and for 10 of those years I followed the lowfat vegan diet of Dr. John McDougal. The McDougal diet served me well until the Spring of 2000 when I became aware of the raw vegan diet some of my friends were following. After a few of their raw food potlucks and a lot of their enthusiasm and encouragement, I was sold. I started out with a few of the Boutenko Family books, then some others, and when I was ready to commit to the raw life style, went out and bought a dehydrator, a high speed blender, a new food processor and I was on my way.
After being a disciplined vegan for so many years, I didn't have any difficulty "going" raw except for one and that was making the adjustment to the tremendous amount of fats I then began consuming. Up until going raw, my diet was squeaky clean. I ate very little avocado, nuts, coconut, seeds. My use of oils was very judicious. Shortly after going raw however, it seemed like my digestive system went into shock. I was already suffering from a debilitating chronic illness; my new digestive problems only exacerbated it. Even though I had an intuition about the high fats, the poor food combining, the dehydrated foods, I wouldn't let myself believe that the raw diet was failing me until my health grew so poor I became disabled and my doctor advised me (among other things of course) to modify my diet. I ate nothing but steamed brown rice and veggies for a year. I was very sick; my diet depressing.
I really believe in the raw philosophy though and wanted badly to return to a raw diet, providing I could make it lowfat. I needed help and wanted science and sound nutrition to back me up. I did a Google search for lowfat raw vegan and came across Dr. Graham's 80/10/10 program. I was thrilled. His book was everything I was looking for and it made so much sense to me ~ all those light bulbs went on in my brain again!
As it turned out, Dr. Graham's 80/10/10 diet saved me! After three months of following the diet I saw a dramatic improvement in my fragile health. I felt stronger and my spirits were lifting. Eventually I gained the weight I desparately needed (doctor's orders that I get to at least 100 lbs and I did), my osteoporosis improved by 2 points, I no longer suffered with candidiasis, and my stomach and intestines were healing! Even my doctor noticed how I was thriving on my new 80/10/10 diet and blessed me for it. (That's quite something coming from a traditional MD!)
I am still chronically ill but somehow know I would be much worse off if I did not eat as well as I do now following the 80/10/10 guidelines. That thought is a huge comfort to me. My diet is one thing I can do for myself while trying to live with a debilitating illness.
So now at long last I must give The 80/10/10 Diet the 5 stars from me that it so richly deserves. I can't measure the praise I have for Dr. Doug Graham.
Book Review: I like the information and format of this book Summary: 4 Stars
I really liked the information Dr Graham provides in his book. I eat about a 50% raw food diet and was a fruitarian for a period of 2 years, about 15 years ago. I did try eating Dr Grahams suggested diet for one week to see how I would feel and if it was something I could continue or at least integrate into my current eating habits. I got really burned out on eating fruit by the 5th day I couldnt stand the thought of eating more. I also had trouble with getting the quantity in. All in all good book - good experience.
Book Review: I want my book back, Kim. Summary: 5 Stars
This is the kind of book so full of intriguing facts and truth, that you just want to lend it out to everyone, but afraid that you might not get it back.
Loaded with charts and information not only for the raw foodist but for the health enthusiast, this book is sure to answer many questions, and will shed light on the big protein and the "eat lots of good fat" debate so prevelant in today's weight loss, health minded society.
I could not recommend this enough, along with the China Study for a very thorough and very convincing information and facts on why a low-fat plant based diet is the very best for health and life.
Book Review: If you want to be at your best, READ this book. Summary: 5 Stars
I first read this book in the summer of 2009.
I was experimenting for the first time with raw food diets and started getting really interested in health.
Almost 2 years later, that passion continues to grow the more I learn and experience what health truly means.
The simplicity and all-rounded approach to health, which author Doug Graham writes about here really struck a chord deep within me.
There is a list on page 10 that consists of 32 factors of health that are to be evaluated by the reader and then given a total score.
I completed the list and also printed it out to give to friends & family, many of who thanked me and wanted to know where I got it from.
I think just this list is an invaluable roadmap to help us stay on track and know where we are.
The information presented in the book is very well expressed. The sources are easily laid out with studies and literature to do further research upon.
If you want health, if you want to be at your 100% best, go on the 80/10/10 and leave the rest.
It may take a little time for some but it is well worth it.
I would also recommend checking out more of the authors books, audio programs, youtube videos and website.
I have also personally been in touch with him through emails and he has been very helpful to me.
This book is a must read for every human being who wants to take control of their lives.
Enjoy your day.
