Book Review: Very good learners or source material book.

One of the problems with guitar tutor books is the material they try to get you playing. They teach you two chords and then get you to play "Sloop John B". The problem is that I don't know anyone who would even admit to being able to play "Sloop John B". It's discouraging. So this book is a great idea. It covers a good deal of material: starts you off with two chords and builds up to about 12 by the end of the first book; covers different strumming patterns; introduces bass-and-strum technique; some bass runs; some basic finger-picking techniques including travis and covers basic melody playing including things like hammer-ons and pull-offs. The material covered includes country, blues, bluegrass, swing and folk. So by the end of it, you should have a pretty good grounding. The text is clear, the examples take you through it in easy stages and none of it feels rushed. The CDs have all the examples on them played up to tempo and slowly. In some cases, the same song is covered more than once, the earlier version being simpified and the later one adding in some more complex flourishes or chords e.g. "I am a Pilgrim" with just major chords and then later with 7th chords and bass runs. If too much was repeated that could get boring but it works well here as a building process. But the best things of all is it doesn't have the "Sloop John B". Instead you get Stagolee, Alberta, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, The Banks of the Ohio, Omie Wise, House of the Rising Sun - tunes you might actually want to play. If you want to learn to play guitar this is a good start, especially of you like blues/country/roots music. Even if you can play a bit and want to improve your technique and add some good material to your repetiore then this is well worth it.
