Book Reviews of The Alchemist

Book Review: A disappointment
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm sorry to say that The Alchemist has to be the biggest disappointment for me(when it comes to reading) in 2009. I really cannot understand what is so life changing about this story. I probably make it sound like I hated this book, that's not the case but I was just really disappointed after all the hype about this book.

Book Review: A fairly good story
Summary: 4 Stars

This book has a simple message. Seek you personal legend in face of adversities. The message in itself is neither new nor highly motivating, perhaps my opinion derives from already reading several books on topics of success, leadership, motivation, etc. Story wise i found it decent but not very engaging and a bit dull for my taste, just not into the whole omens, shepherd, king, legends type of story. But overall a good book and worth reading.

Book Review: A gentle reminder to follow your dreams...
Summary: 3 Stars

This book was a good little book because it could have delivered the same message by taking us on a journey from New York to California, but it didn't... it took us from Spain to Egypt and that is what makes it enjoyable. The charm comes from the gypsies, dessert dwellers, kings, even Santiago's relationship with his sheep. As so many books we've all read before, this fast read reminds us to follow your dreams, follow your heart, and "don't give in to your fears," in a simple succinct fashion.

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself." - Paolo Coelho, The Alchemist

Book Review: A good read for young teens
Summary: 3 Stars

Maybe if this novel were categorized as a Young Adult book (for ages 12 through the teen years) I could accept this story as it stands. And I like to read books for teens--some of them are terrific fun, particularly the "chick lit" books. But I just don't understand how this is not only read by, apparantly, all ages but many of the favorable reviews here are written by people well over 18!

I don't know if I get this--except to say that maybe Coelho's books appeals to people who just don't have time for a lot of fiction and want something pleasant and light. Because, certainly, that is the only way I could see any value with this very simplistic story.

The formula of a search or journey is very predictable and rather cliched here. There's so much better out there.

Book Review: A great story!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was great, it kept me interested from beginning to end! Very insperational and exciting!
