Book Review: A Superb 19th Century Murder Mystery

The Alienist has everything I look for in a great mystery tale, the characters and imagery are suspenseful, haunting, and chilling. It was a joy to sit back and enjoy the beauty of excellent writing in a well constructed story.
The storytelling is eloquent and descriptive and the historical and scientific setting feels authentic. I felt as though I was transported back to 19th century New York, experiencing along with the characters the history and social structure of the city one hundred years ago.
This story is an excellent psychological drama recounting a turn of the century New York physician and criminologist in his quest understand and capture a serial killer. This chilling murder mystery kept me enthralled from beginning to end. I highly recommend Caleb Carr's Caleb Carr masterfully written tale.
