As an OB/Gyn physician, I was interested in reading this book, and the reading of it was easy. I did like his depiction of 19th century life. HOWEVER, I found it very distasteful to take known pillars of surgical history and demean / besmirch their names in what was called a piece of HISTORICAL FICTION. Fiction does not use real people to make them look like villans without any fact whatsoever. I think the whole subject could have been just as well covered without the use of real physicians who were well ahead of their time, and who DID change the way modern medicine has developed. I'm not sure I understand the author's reasons for writing this book the way he did. I enjoyed the mystery of the story, but not how the doctors involved were depicted. Maybe the author has some reason to distrust physicians, but he could have expressed his opinion in other ways. I won't be reading him again.
