Book Review: A Skillful Mix of Humor and Action

They say you can't judge a book by its cover, but the jacket of Android's Dream is, in fact, revealing. Unlike Scalzi's previous books, there are no spacecraft hovering menacingly above a planet, ready to attack. Instead, we have the whimsical image of an android, peacefully dreaming of electric sheep. The cover tips you off that this is a different kind of book for Scalzi: a sci-fi adventure in which tongue-in-cheek humor is the driving force. (And if you miss that message, the first sentence will spell it out clearly enough!)
Android's Dream is not an out-and-out farce, like Hitchhiker's Guide, but its humor is never far from the surface. And that's good, because Scalzi has a deft touch. He creates scenes and characters that resonate with irony, yet avoid crossing the line into the ridiculous. As a result, the story is still believable enough to be a genuine adventure, with lots of action, aliens, and intrigue. It reads like a science fiction version of a Christopher Moore novel.
Like most madcap adventures, the story line is full of twists and turns. The good guys run from the bad guys, discover clues, and fight their way out of traps. It's not terribly original, but it is entertaining and well written. Harry Creek, the main character, is a cyber-era Sam Spade, a man with a shadowy past but a heart of gold, quick with a quip or a plan of action. I can see him starring in many a sequel.
By design, Android's Dream lacked the depth I had come to expect from Old Man's War and Ghost Brigades. Overall, though, it is an enjoyable read. I look forward to the further exploits of Harry and Robin.
