Book Reviews of The AppealBook Review: A good beginning, followed by complete boredom Summary: 1 Stars
The first book I read by the author was The Rainmaker, which was excellent. And then, there's The Appeal. Grisham starts off with an interesting, although somewhat exaggerated court case, and then turns it into two hundred tedious pages about a political campaign to elect a state court judge. I had to skim the last hundred pages, and even with 20 pages to go, I had to force myself to see who won the election. Also, the ending takes a turn which adds nothing.
Book Review: A soapbox for Mr Grisham, not a novel Summary: 1 Stars
This is 500 pages of what Mr Grisham thinks is wrong with the legal system -and he is clearly sympathetic to tort lawyers, without even bothering to be entertaining at all. The trial lawyers were all heros sacrificing their personal wealth to help poor innocent victims of evil corporations. The heroes were not lovable and the villains were too one dimensional to hate. There weren't ANY examples of greedy lawyers filing frivolous lawsuits, and there weren't any examples of businesses who care about their employees and customers, or who were dragged into court for no fault of their own. Mr Grisham has clearly made enough money that he no longer has to write entertaining books- that will be the last one I buy.
Book Review: AWOL at the end Summary: 2 Stars
I've always liked Grisham's work. About 95% of this book doesn't disappoint. It has a compelling story, interesting characters and plausible events.
The last chapter, however, feels like he wrote it in 30 minutes. The events of the conclusion might be possible but this seems the shorthand version. What did Grisham do, call in the last few pages in from the airport?
Book Review: After over 500 reviews what else is there? Summary: 4 Stars
I will keep this short. I have read Grisham, but mostly his early works. I know him to be a very good and entertaining story teller. I was bored and needed something to read, so I bought this one.
Look the plot is very good and current. I like the heroes and hated the bad guys, so that part was good.
HERE IS THE KICKER: As I got nearer to the end, I began to wonder how it would end. As the pages dwindled, I kept thinking how are the good guys going to win. With fewer pages left, I began to think, he not going to let the bad guys win is he? Then with the last pages Grisham put in the Judge's epiphany, I thought, "NO way! Cop out!" Then the ending came and I screamed no! But yes that is is life. Some people have suggested that Grisham got tired and took the easy way out. I say Grisham had the "balls" to take the real way out.
Book Review: Agree with the average reviewer Summary: 3 Stars
I'm going to have to agree with the average opinion here that it's not his best book. And I've always said that a hungry author makes the best author. I also agree with some of the reviewers that I don't want to hear Grisham's agenda disguised as a novel pushed down my throat, but he's done that before and gotten away with it.
pros: It's an easy reading book and I know that Grisham can still write a good book. (I really liked his last one I read "Playing for Pizza".)
cons: I didn't like any of the characters in the book. It just didn't do it for me. The book might as well have been titled "Why trial lawyers deserve trillion dollar settlements" or "Greed is good".
