Book Reviews of The AppealBook Review: An Educational But Depressing Read Summary: 3 Stars
As usual, John Grisham's latest novel is a fast-paced read. His writing is smooth and the pages fly. Despite what some reviewers said here, I never found the book slow or boring. I learned a lot about various legal issues (the appellate process, the function of state supreme court judges) and electoral politics, so in that regard the book was worth reading. But as a story it ultimately left me cold.
The standard Grisham characters were there; the noble underdog lawyers take on the amoral fat cats of big money and big business. But unlike his previous books, this time the bad guys win. After yanking readers along on an emotional roller coaster with the characters in the book, Mr. Grisham derails us and sends us careening into a fiery crash. Yes, I know in reality that sometimes evil triumphs, but this was too much of a downer. Grisham could have made his point (we should appoint judges rather than elect them) without the heartbreakingly bleak ending. It made our investment in the story and the characters feel wasted.
Book Review: An Eye Opener! Summary: 5 Stars
Now I understand how George Bush got to be our president!! Wow, what an eye opener. I couldn't figure out how Bush did it, but John Grisham has explained it in the form of a story. Just insert current-event names and positions and you have the Bush administration complete with Dick Cheyney and Carl Rove. Citizens take note so we can recognize and prevent this kind of co-opting of a nation in the future. I think this is a must read for every American.
Book Review: An Eye-Opening Book Summary: 5 Stars
John Grisham, I picked up The Appeal after watching your interview with Charlie Rose. Thank you for writing this book. It opened my eyes to the bribery, deception, and shenanigans that go on behind the scenes in politics. While this is a work of fiction, it brings to light the corruption that is very real in our world today.
I found it especially sad that trusting Christian people were (and are) taken advantage of in a political race.
Not only was your book interesting to read, but it also made an impact on my opinions. And isn't that really what great writing is all about?
Book Review: An Eye-opener Summary: 5 Stars
This book applies to many political races where an unknown suddenly comes on the scene with too much money, too much push by the media and other big names and seems to pull the wool over gullible people.
It is very scary.

Book Review: An Honest Ending Summary: 4 Stars
I too was a little dissapointed in the ending of The Appeal, but after thinking about it for a while I realized that it was a very appropiate ending. I think we as readers are too used to having happy endings in our books. John Grisham had the honesty to offer us something else. I look forward to his next book.
