Book Review: The art is mightier than the words.

The book opens with a brief preface by the movie's director Robert Zemeckis and a foreword by scriptwriter Neil Gaiman. But as the title states this publication is all about the art and not the language of Beowulf.
The artists at Zemeckis' Image Movers production company have produced some truly stunning work which graces the 160 pages of this book. It is packed with paintings, portraits, digital images as well as many photographs of sculptures and CG models. The locations, monsters and characters are all visualised to great effect and most of the images are complimented by comments from the artists, production team or the actors themselves.
The book gives the reader an insight into how the actors' features were digitally altered to fulfil the director's demands. Crispin Glover's features were incorporated into the grotesque form of the monster Grendel through the use of sculpture and then digital rendering. Angelina Jolie's features were slightly altered to create the sultry image of Grendel's mother. But how do you make the sexiest woman in the world even sexier? And who would have thought that Beowulf himself was based on an image of Jesus Christ with a bit of Clint Eastwood intensity in the eyes? Nothing like Ray Winstone then.
For fans of medieval fantasy imagery this book is highly recommended. For fans of the Beowulf movie it is essential.
