Book Review: Great, typical Berg writing... Summary: 4 Stars
I am a HUGE fan of Elizabeth Berg. Her writing is addictive--poignant and inspirational. This was a fabulous page-turner, as I've found is typical with all of her other books.
Book Review: If you pull but one thread it can all unravel Summary: 4 Stars
This is a story of a family, and the inequities in the dynamics between family members. The family in the story has gathered for their annual reunion and visit to the Minnesota state fair. Everyone is planning on looking at the animals, riding the rides and gorging on junk food. But Laura Bartone's sister, Caroline, has other plans. She wants an evening alone with Laura and their brother Steve to discuss something. Tragedy strikes the family and Caroline's discussion consists of accusations against their mother. Each of the siblings must examine their own childhood as they knew it to reconcile the differences and mend the family. As always, Elizabeth Berg's prose flows and draws you into the story. She prefaces a number of the chapters with the description of a photo that Laura is examining in her quest for understanding her sister Caroline.
Book Review: Mothers, Daughters and family secrets. Summary: 3 Stars
50-something quilt artist Laura Bartone is forced to confront the secrets that have long haunted her family during their yearly family reunion.
Laura is not so thrilled to attend but she has never missed a reunion and she is also looking forward to seeing her siblings and her parents and enjoy quality time with her hubby and her two kids at the fair.
After their long drive to their parents' place in Minnesota, Laura's sister Caroline comes clean with Laura and their brother Steve, telling them that she has been abused physically by their mother throughout her childhood.
Laura and Steve are shocked, they cannot believe this has happened under their noses with them not noticing a single thing.... They don't believe Caroline at the beginning but as memories come forward they will learn to make their peace with these disturbing confessions from their sister.
To add to the family's tension, Laura's Dad dies and the trip is cut short. Laura stays with her mother and begins to untangle the riddle of conflicting childhood memories.
An entertaining story about family secrets and labyrinths.
Book Review: Really? 2.5 stars Summary: 3 Stars
I'm with the brother....and, nutmeg in mashed potatoes?? blech........
The story was "ok" I'm not sure if North Dakota is really ready for a flamboyantly gay fabric store manager, but hey, I could be wrong. Mean Mommy or Mean Sister: The drama really wasn't dramatic. I did stay with it till then end and there were places that I thought it was well done. The rest--often pretentious, often just not "quite ?" But, not "quite" WHAT?? It misses it's mark.
