Book Review: A Great Book, but Not for $50
Summary: 4 Stars
First of all, this book will make all your other movie art books look small in comparison. It is nearly 15 inches in height. The size of the book allows for large, detailed images within. The imagery in this books is mostly concept art and storyboards. Concept art from all three films are included. Even concepts that didn't make it into the finished films are included here. For example, several pieces of art include hammerhead sharks. You can see the progression as the artists refine the details of Davy Jones' and his crew. Also, there are entire sequences storyboarded - the highlight being the swordfight on the giant wheel from "Dead Man's Chest".
As great as the product is, the retail price on this book is $50. I would not recommend spending that amount of money for this product. I purchased a bargain copy for $20 - the book was in perfect condition - and I feel like I got a good value, but having the product I can say that it is not worth spending $50.
Another quality Pirates of the Caribbean book with a lot of imagery, although much smaller than this art book, is Pirates of the Caribbean Visual Guide. If you are looking a more well-rounded book that also gives some insight into the making of the films, I would recommend Bring Me That Horizon: The Making of Pirates of the Caribbean.
