This book promises in the description by the publisher that "with just a quarter acre of land, you can feed a family of four with fresh, organic food year-round. This comprehensive guide to self-sufficiency has all the information you need to grow and preserve vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, and grains; raise chickens for eggs and meat; raise cows, sheep, and goats for meat or milk; raise pigs and rabbits; and keep honey bees. Simple instructions make it easy to enjoy canned, frozen, dried, and pickled produce all winter; use your own grains to make bread, pasta, and beer; turn fresh milk into delicious homemade yogurt, butter, and cheese; make your own wine, cordials, and herbal teas; and much, much more. It truly is possible to eat entirely from your backyard."
I will confess up front that I have not yet tried any of the projects for homesteading in this book and have no plans to invest in livestock or a bee hive. I also can't attest to the accuracy of all the information but if I was going to turn our property into a homestead, this is a book I would start with. For someone like me with no experience in farming, raising animals, or growing food beyond a basic vegetable garden, the information in this book was not intimidating and I was left thinking we could actually navigate our way through the basics of homesteading if it became necessary. Therefore, my review is based on liking it as a resource for what is possible, in case we would need to know.
For those wanting to start with a simple garden to ease the food budget and enjoy fresh vegetables, or who want to learn the basics of food preservation, this book is a great resource. Those who are more experienced will find plenty of information for taking their homesteading to the next level.
