Book Reviews of The Bark Of The Dogwood: A Tour Of Southern Homes And GardensBook Review: A 7.6 on the Richter scale Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not one to write a review on any book, anytime. But occasionally a novel comes along that has such an impact on my psyche, my well-being, that I feel compelled to tell everyone about it. Oh, I read a lot--sometimes three books a week. But most disappoint me in one way or another. Loose ends, bad writing, or a plot that does its best to meander somewhere. So when I saw this book paired with some other great bestsellers, I bought it. Turns out, those "other" books fell by the wayside. This one, however, stuck.
Where to begin. First of all, the author's ability to handle different writing styles is amazing. From the poetic languid descriptions of the South to the short and snappy New York dialogue it all works somehow, to make the reader feel for these people and places. Sure, if you're intellectually challenged, then this book may pose a problem for you. Latin names of plants, references to great works of art, music, and books, and a connection with famous historical figures make for a three dimensional read. But aside from that, there is the human element in this book.
You'll find yourself wanting to know who the real people are in this book, and, since it was based on a true story, complete with true coincidences and true horror, you'll be wondering how the author survived such trials. But evidently he did.
One word of warning: If you don't like the sardonic humor of writers such as David Sedaris, then you won't warm to this excellent novel. If you shy away from books such as "Sybil" (remember that one?) with its child abuse and horrific parents, then this is not for you either. If, however, you like great writing, an author who can handle complicated forms and plots, a story that is earth-shattering, and an ultimately redeeming and uplifting ending (better get a box of tissues ready), then you'll love this novel.
Exactly how much of this story is true I cannot say. But as the saying goes, "Truth is stranger than fiction." And things don't get any stranger (or any more beautiful and shocking), than this book. I very highly recommend this novel. My one disappointment? That I won't ever agin find anything as well written and moving as this. In a way, I'm angry--this book has raised the bar for me on all other books and I'm bound to be disappointed.
