Book Reviews of The Beach

Book Review: A Cliff's Notes version of "Lord of the Flies."
Summary: 1 Stars

It's a book version ofa computer game--one dimensional characters, emotional distance from the action, and--don't worry--all the violence is "cartoon violence" so nobody really gets hurt. An unimaginative, lowbrow book disguised as a middlebrow book. The worst insult I can find: It deserves to be made into a movie.

Book Review: A Gen X Lord of the Flies. A brilliant page turner.
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone interested in travel and youth culture will very much enjoy this unique story about backpackers set in Thailand. Read this book before the movie comes out, which will not capture the pulse of the fast, witty, and convincing narration.

Book Review: A Generation X er take on Lord of the Flies
Summary: 4 Stars

This novel is captivating from start, downtown seedy Bangkok to finish, a remote Thai island miles away from civilization. Garland writes like he knows what he's talking about--the find yourself youth travel culture and the fine threads that keep a small group together or tear it apart. This novel charts the travels of a British male (Garland?) and two French companions from backpacker row to an eerily familiar Lord of the Flies-style remote island where pecking order will unite or destroy a compelling group of characters. A fabulous travel novel!

Book Review: A Great Read
Summary: 5 Stars

The Beach by Alex Garland is a great book and should be included as one of the best freshman books ever. It's fast paced (but not to fast paced so that you don't know what's going on half the time) and can easily be read by even a casual reader in less than a week and a half. I'm only 14 and it took me only two weeks. You can't put it down.

Book Review: A MODERN CLASSIC
Summary: 5 Stars

I could rave about this book for days and tell you a specific part that drew me in to the point where nothing else mattered around me for days. I will not. I will say that this quite possibly is the greatest book ever written. It should be issued to you when you are born.
