Book Reviews of The Beach

Book Review: A brilliant first novel . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

I found myself completely immersed from the initial meeting between Richard and Mr. Duck up until the final thoughts in the brief epilogue. The characters are richly drawn and the backdrop is colourful and vivid, allowing the reader a real sense of the characters' personalities and a true feel for the lush setting. That in combination with Garland's insight and natural story-telling ability makes this a real page-turner and incredible read. Though there are obvious parallels to Golding's Lord of the Flies and Conrad's Heart of Darkness, these references only add to the paradise-like / nightmarish quality of the plot itself and has the reader probing a bit further into the psyche of the human mind. For a first novel, it encompasses as much depth and intensity as other revered classics of our time. Truly a stunning piece of literary work.

Book Review: A classic story of envy and confrontation.
Summary: 4 Stars

The Beach is an exciting book, suspensful and full of imagination. The story line is well drawn out with confrontations, resolutions and moral questions to be answered. A vividly written story with tense moments and anxious characters.

Book Review: A definite must-read. The book of a life-time.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The plot is surprisingly simple, yet somehow intrigues at every page. The characters are real and easily human, no idealistic views or unrealistic heroes. The Beach itself is a fairy-tale you want to believe in, every chapter is amazing! If you haven't read this book, you haven't lived!

Book Review: A different and enjoyable book
Summary: 4 Stars

I liked the descriptions of Thailand and these "travelers" who occupied the beach. The story definitely kept me interested and I would recommend it.

Book Review: A disappointment
Summary: 3 Stars

This book was recommended to me. I found it to be a disappointment. It was a great concept and ok story but it lacked the suspense that other authors can give. It is certainly an over-rated book.
