Book Reviews of The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs: A Novel

Book Review: Damn silly ending
Summary: 3 Stars

Despite the mixed reviews, this book is still worth reading if you've enjoyed any of Welsh's other work. This one is still a page turner, but lacks cohesion.

The message that Scotlands social drinking culture makes many of the population borderline alcoholics is a valid and timely one, which certainly made me look at myself in the mirror!

The main problem with this book is the ending. I wont spoil it for anyone, but it is just unbelievable.

Still an enjoyable read, though.

Book Review: Excellent Stuff.
Summary: 5 Stars

A lot of people are saying this book isn't that good, Welsh is just playing to his usual sterotypes etc. etc. But that is exactly why this book is good! Most novelists are boring and pedestrian, not Welsh. He has a fantastic imagination and a really good way of telling a good story. What more do people want? This book is funny, intelligent and will have you reading it in no time. So what if it's a story of drunken, drug addled Scottish debauchery, that's what we need more of. Forget your high minded Guardian and Observer reviews, where apparently Welsh hasn't moved on, of course he's moved on, he's written a really good book - again!

Book Review: More of Welsh's Dark Spaces
Summary: 4 Stars

This book has received poor reviews. I'm an Irvine Wesh fan , found it a good read . Welsh has neutralised the Scottish dialect as compared to his other novels , and introduced characters with obvious influences from those in his others such as Marabou Storks Strang and Filths Police Officer to create this dark diverse tale ,which has Welsh's usual elements of toilet humour alcoholism, drug addiction in this case further insites in to sexuality, identity and sex and depravity. In Master Chef's Welsh delves in to some of his most darkest spaces in a modern day perverse working class Jekyl and Hyde/ Dorian Gray in Edinburgh's Leith. I found it quite strong in his new area's of viewpoints, similies , metaphors, stream of conciousness. The Bedroom Secrets of The Master Chef is one of Welsh's best and blends horror humour with Welsh's obscene and bizarre. Don't listen to the negative reviews read it !

Book Review: Unbelievably bad
Summary: 1 Stars

There are not many books that I put down before I finish them, but this is so bad that it made me feel as if I was slowly dying - life is too short to read such awful work. Not only is the conceit on which it is based simply silly, but the characterisations are sloppy and just dislikeable. The story just meanders its way along from one blackly uncomic scene to another, and you get the distinct impression that the author doesn't really know himself where it is going. The engaging spirit and brilliant imagination of his earlier books is so absent that one wonders whether this is in fact a spoof Welsh novel. It is akin listening to one of the later Oasis albums - the same chords are being used, but without the old purpose or clarity. One wonders whether his publishers were putting him under pressure to produce just anything. A dreadful, dreadful book. If you finish it, you have too much time on your hands.

Book Review: His Worst Book So Far!
Summary: 2 Stars

I am a big fan.

But this was his worst book by a long way so far!
