Book Review: Not much to celebrate

I received this book as a Christmas present from someone who knows I love birds, and I was initially thrilled to receive it. It is undoubtedly a beautifully presented volume: it is tastefully bound, with satisfyingly thick pages & stunning illustrations, and generally has a quality "antique" feel to it.Unfortunately, I didn't feel the content lived up to the packaging. I found most of the chosen pieces a bit turgid. It felt like a big intellectual exercise to find the most obscure pieces of bird folklore & mythology, rather than being a celebration of the best writing about birds.
I really disliked the fact that a large proportion of the pieces contained references to the death or slaughter of birds. I'm sure many bird-lovers are like me, and don't consider this to be the best way to send themselves off to sleep. And I'm sure the person who bought it for me did not expect their gift to leave me feeling rather depressed...
