Book Reviews of The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit

Book Review: the belgariad: Volume One
Summary: 5 Stars

I have tried to get into fantasy before with out much luck. Then i tried David Eddings. AMAZING!! Hi fresh style made me unable to put the book down. His style of writing (or should i say theirs!)is such that i felt part of his world. The book is funny and interesting with lots going on, but not too much as to loose the reader. I have since read all his other books and have never been dissapointed yet! This is a good book for people who are wary of fantasy to start with.

Book Review: fab new world
Summary: 5 Stars

This series of books (along with the mallorean ..and yes there is another 5 in that too!) are wonderfully funny, wonderfully humorous with endearing characters and feel like a family once you've got to know everyone - and as everyone is introduced slowly you suddenly realise you have stumbled (or been recommended!!) upon a rich and vibrant and delightful world. Garion is the lead character, and like other books there is prophecy (which kinda helps everyone work out where they are going) intrigues at palaces, chivalry, knights, a few love interests for most of the main characters - even a dragon! But most of all it's about the will and the word - if you will something (stones livitating, roses out of thin air)and you have the 'knack' you too can save mankind...or in this case, save the entire planet from an interstellar accident that happened a very long time ago.
I loved this series of books and have been rereading them for over 10 years (does that make me sad?). Enjoy!

Book Review: Very Poor Fantasy
Summary: 1 Stars

I love fantasy novels but this series is unimaginative, dull, uninspiring and utterly predictable. How this has come to be rated a classic is beyond me. A very poor Tolkien imitation. The main characters are never in any danger, they plod through various adventures with no real rational behind their actions and this series borrows shamelessly from other fantasy sagas. Ohhh there is a chosen one - ohhh there is a feisty girl (do u think they will fall in love?)

Rad George R R Martin instead - an unpredictable and brilliant fantasy writer

Book Review: The Belgariad Series
Summary: 4 Stars

A case of the journey being more enjoyable then the final destination.

Luckily, I had heard enough good reviews about the series that I bought all five books when I got the chance.
I was totally engrossed after the first chapter and it kept getting better. There was so much action, information and character development going on that I read the first book on day one and started the second. I loved the different characters, I loved finding out about the different civilisations in the books. You get your people, Magician's, Giants, etc. and whole host of bad guys from different civilisations and those that aren?t good or bad really just protecting their own interests. I had to keep going and read the last book to find out the outcome.

However you will notice that I gave it 4 stars and not 5. The reason is that there are a few issues that I think readers should be made aware of in case they do the same as me and buy all 5 books and regret it.
The thinks that let the series down were:
- It seemed in parts that it was meant for the younger reader as well as adults.
- Some events are very predictable and the young characters very stereotypical
- The companions kept on setting off on new sub-adventures ? it felt like it was just so that 5 books could be published rather then 2-3.
- The main thing that that let the book down was the ending it happened so fast that it felt was this worth reading 5 books over

As I progressed through the series I found that it was taking longer to read each book. I finally finished after 2 weeks.

Eddings does create a very real fantasy world but it is not in the same league as Jordon?s Wheel of Time Series, Martin?s A Song of Ice..., Hobb?s Assassin Series?, etc. and therefore doesn?t come close to the ultimate in fantasy Lord of the Rings.
In brief, it was a great fantasy series that I could really get engrossed in but there are some boring parts that you have to wade through and the ending gives you a feeling that you have been somewhat cheated. But, I don't regret buying the whole series.

Book Review: hmmmmmmmm
Summary: 4 Stars

The first book is a bit slow so i wasn't sure if i should read the rest of the series but......anyway good characters, feels real and smells real(?). The second is brilliant with loads of adventuring and i've got to admit this is quite a funny book. The third is the best though with some problems being solved and loads of action. Nice and easy read so most people will enjoy it.
