Book Reviews of The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit

Book Review: A good start to a mediocre series
Summary: 3 Stars

The beginning of the Belgariad definitely makes for good reading. Most characters have an air of mystery about them that makes you desperately want to discover more. Especially the first instalment, the Pawn of Prophecy, promises a good fantasy epic.

But alas, the series can not make good that early promise. Unoriginal plotlines and predictable character developments spoil the later books. The greatest shortcoming of this series, and even more so of the next series, the Malloreon, is the gross escalation of the main characters? magical powers. With the biggest assembly of the most powerful magicians of all time (and tooled up to the eyeballs with magical enery) plodding through the country side on some quest or other, new reasons need to be invented constantly why they can?t just bowl in and save the world in less than five pages flat. This also makes all characters without magical endowments seem rather useless and superfluous.

Nevertheless, the Belgariad can be recommended as an entertaining fantasy read, though surely not the classic epic that some people try to make it out as. However, should you read and enjoy it, do resist the temptation to follow it up with the Malloreon which is in parts more cringe-worthy than David Brent doing his Flash Dance.

Book Review: Probably the BEST series of books in the history of fiction
Summary: 5 Stars

A real joy to read, cunning plot, teamed with good humour made this series my all time favourite!!! Eddings has exelled himself in this feat of fictional engineering!!!!

Book Review: Brill

Cheesy, predictable and brilliant. It was the first fantasy series i every read and the most satisfying.

Book Review: The Belgariad
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been reading these breathtaking books for 7 years I normaly dust them off once a year and lose myself in another world, Laughter, joy, tears, fright, fantastic battles and friendships, and a family bond that will never be broken. It's a great shame this couldnt be made into a film like the box office smash we've all heard of. You can imagine your with them on the quests, fantastic. READ IT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.

Book Review: My first fantasy series!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ah the belgariad, i first read this many years ago (late 80s i think) and i was hooked. Even now i reread the whole series when i'm waiting for something new to come out. (like the new wheel of time)

Some reviewers say its not as complex or "adult" as the wheel of time and/or anything by Feist, this is quite true, but if it hadnt been for the belgariad i wouldnt have read the wheel of time or Magician...

This is a must for any Fantasy fan, especially a young fan. I was roughly the same age as garion when i first read it and i travelled with him on his adventures... I like these books so much i recently gave copies to my nephew who is just starting to be into books as an intro to fantasy!!

I highly recommend this to anyone who hasnt read them yet (why not?). Admit it all you fans, you all want a grandfather like belgarath!!!
