If you liked "What Was She Thinking? Notes On a Scandal", you will not be disappointed with Zoe's new book, "The Believers". Heller's writing is delightful and entertaining to read. "The Believers" follows the life of the Livintoff family members. The characters are complex and very well developed. Like real life, the characters have many layers and are difficult to pigeon hole. There is no "bad guy" or "good guy" in this novel. Most readers may find themselves liking and then alternatively disliking each of the characters in the different parts of the book. Fortunately, unlike many realistic books, where there is little suspense or plot, "The Believers" is not boring and in fact is very engaging.
Heller is among other fine authors from the UK like McEwan and Ishiguro. Unlike McEwan she can weave a much better tale though. The dialogue and subplots are exceptionally well presented. It had some of the best dialogue I have read in a novel. You will learn a lot about the characters through what they say. It is time for Zoe Heller to be awarded the Booker Prize already. Highly recommended!
