The bell jar is amongst the best works of fiction that I have read. It details the traumatic life of a troubled but brilliant teenage girl. Essentially it is a rites of passage novel. In that respect is it far more superior and insightful than 'the catcher in the rye' for example. When I purchased the book, the shop assistant warned me: "it's very gloomy", hence I was surprised to find a sharp wit underscoring many of its passages. And even the darker second half of the novel is always narrated with sharp, unflinching poetry that never stoops into hysterics. The books is up there with the best fiction of this century. It is Hamlet in the novel form.
