Book Review: A great guide for the budding Sanskritist

If you ever wanted to read the Gita in the original, then you need to learn Sanskrit. Simple fact. For this, the best and easiest text is Thomas Egenes'. Everyone's raving on about it, and rightly so. His first vol. goes through grammar and fantastic exercises, and the second volume uses Gita shlokas as a means of teaching further grammar. So it's contextual and you get to read Gita verses too. Good eh?!
But that only covers so many verses. After all, you can't expect Egenes to cover the whole Gita. This is where Winthrop Sargeant comes in. My former Sanskrit teacher told me that grammatically, the text with the easiest Sanskrit is the Gita. Once you've gone through Egenes, you need Sargeant's, for what he does is takes each verse, and describes the grammatical form each word is in i.e. the case, gender, number, pada, root, tense etc. etc. so that you know exactly how the words are brought together in meaning. And it's presented so clearly and simply.
So if you know Sanskrit, and want help in reading the Gita, this is the text for you.
