Book Reviews of The Birth Book: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Safe and Satisfying Birth (Sears Parenting Library)

Book Review: More anti-hospital biased than seems, but good read
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this book with the impression that it fairly showed both sides of the natural vs. medicated birth debate. But it clearly leans toward natural births. But it is still a good read if you are trying to decide whether you are going natural or medicated. It makes the medical community seem more "evil" than reality. At least in my expereice, the hospital i gave birth at is very accomidating to the mother's wishes and encourages many natural practices first. SO this book can freak you out, and make you more fearful than need be. But yeah, this book helped me out, and was worth reading.

Book Review: Natural birth or else....
Summary: 2 Stars

I am a first-time mother and was trying to find a book to give me some insight on my available birthing options. I had hoped that this book would give me the non-judgemental information on both a natural and a medicated birth. What I got instead, is a book that is so severly biased towards natural birth that the hospital birth scenario described makes you believe that it is down-right dangerous to give birth to your infant in a hospital setting using an "evil" ObGyn. The authors try to throw in statements that make you not feel like a monster for thinking about using drugs in your birthing plan, but the attempts are incredibly feeble and in the end you do feel like a monster for considering it. For example, a mother that chooses medical pain relief to assist her labor "places little value on experiencing the birth process itself". In addition, "High-tech solutions to pain often take away more than the pain itself". But if you decide to give birth in a pool of water in your living room, you are somehow naturally a mother.

If it would have been presented as a book that was obviously one geared for natural childbirth I would have been fine with the presentation of material, but it's billed as one that will give you information on all the options. Needless to say, I am greatly disappointed at the bias presented in this book.

Book Review: Great book - from a c-section mom
Summary: 5 Stars

I just had to write a review after reading some of the negative reviews. I read this book cover to cover before the birth of my 1st child. While we had hoped for a natural child birth experience, a SEVERE life threatening emergency forced us into an emergency c-section. Yes, I read the book, and no I don't feel guilty for having a procedure that saved my life and that of my baby. The fact of the matter still remains that there are WAY too many c-sections births in the U.S and even though pain killers sound nice, they still DO reach the baby. Those are the facts, ladies, and Dr.Sears makes those facts and risks well known. Less intervention is BEST for baby!! It sounds as if some of the nagative reviewers want to be told that the risks don't exist, and HOORAY for Dr. Sears for not softening the truth!

Book Review: Excellent on your options having birth
Summary: 5 Stars

For all those negative reviewers that tell it is preachy or what not. It is not. It covers having a C-section positively. It says that a mother having a C-Section is better than one trying to endure natural labor and resenting the baby. What it condemns is Drs. and hospitals pushing C-Sections o

It goes through the way to look for care providers etc... C-section rates, attitudes, etc.

As for the prenatal tests. One reviewer below blasted the author about having a child with birth defects. Would taking the test changed that? NO! The author points out that these tests aren't always accurate and can cause undo stress. I have known people it happened to.

It gives much in helpful advise no matter what you do. It also asks question in dealing with EFM/Ultrasound and the fact it is an ultrasound that is pointed at the baby in a single spot for long periods of time. It is unknown if there are any problems as this is a new proceedure.

Covers as to why you are in pain and what you can do about it. Then points to medical options and there side effects.

Book Review: The Best Birth Book Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best book about birth ever. Without candy-coated new-age fantasies about pain-free labor nor medical establishment nonsense about the absolute necessity of medical pain relief and other medical interventions, this book will help every women learn to trust her inate ability to have the most positive, satisfying and healthy birth experience possible. This is a must read for all expectant mothers whether it's their first or fourth!
