Book Reviews of The Birth Partner: Everything You Need to Know to Help a Woman Through Childbirth, Second Edition

Book Review: Fantastic for fathers!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is great. My husband loves it! Its factual and open. It gets birth partners (more specifically fathers!) involved in the pregnancy and birthing process. Instead of assuming the father will feel as certain way, it asks the reader questions that enable reflection on whats going on for them, and their role in the process. It makes the partner feel connected, involved and knowledgeable. It gives factual advice on labour and delivery as well as exercises the partner can do with the mother. It's a must have for both father and mother-to-be!

I highly recommend this book. This is a great resource for expectant fathers and mothers, Labor Doulas in training and experienced Doulas looking for extra resources.

Penny Simpkins is a Physical Therapist and has specialized in childbirth education since 1968. Penny is also a Labor Doula and serves on several boards of consultants and editorial boards. Most recently Penny has completed her first video "The 3 R's Rhythm, Ritual and Relaxation".

The Birth Partner is full of helpful advice for the birth support person. One of the greatest sections to this book is the illustrations of comfort positions and the explanation of how to use the positions. Different techniques are helpful at different junctures throughout labor. This is a book that explains when each technique will be most beneficial for most women.

The Birth Partner helps the new support person to understand the role he or she will play to the laboring woman. Penny assists the support person in easing into their new role and offers the advice and knowledge they will need to make it through pre-labor, labor and birth.

Book Review: If you really want to be a PARTNER, this is the book to read!
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't even count how many times I have checked this book out from the library. It's great to see that it is in it's second edition and still getting great reviews and helping so many people. I read this book from cover to cover when I was pregnant with my first child. My husband wanted to support me in my efforts to give birth naturally but wasn't sure how--and I wasn't sure what to tell him. Lamaze classes didn't really help him to understand his role. He wanted to be more than the pillow holder and breathing coach. After reading this book I was able to tell him exactly what he could do and say that would really help me. As he is not an avid reader, I read and then discussed each section with him. This definitely helped build confidence and trust for both of us. We have since been able to have 4 natural and unmedicated births, which I belive would be nearly impossible without the right kind of support from a labor partner.

With each of our 4 pregnancies we have reviewed the books that have helped us the most. This one is definitely in our top 5 and we recommend it highly, along with anything else written by Penny Simkin.
