Book Review: "Blue" was how it left me

As a die-hard Grimes fan (and, like Vivian Rivington, half in love with both Jury and Plant)I was extremely disappointed in Grimes' latest effort. The entire novel seems poorly concieved and sloppily executed, leaving the impression of a work badly rushed or incomplete. Personally, I didn't mind the ending so much as the recycling of already over-used plot lines and characters. How many of these confused identity, is she-isn't she stories is the author intending to write? Then there are the recycled names (Gemma, again? Wasn't once enough?) and characters (plucky little motherless boy with dog confounds evil Social Services - oh, please). And what on earth was Polly Praed doing in this story, anyway? Apart from the fact that she's not interesting enough to warrant a recurring role, as far as I could tell she neither furthered the plot nor enlivened the dialogue. The Blue Last is not wholly without merit. Martha Grimes has a wonderful, evocative, satisfying writing style even when she isn't half trying. But it seems as though Ms. Grimes is getting tired of this set of characters, (like Sayers with Lord Peter or Christie with Poirot)and perhaps of the whole mystery genre. If that is the case, I would beg of her not to submit to pressure from her publishers to write more Jury novels. I would prefer never to read another in the series than to experience the let-down occasioned by a mediocrity where excellence was confidently anticipated.
