Book Reviews of The Boat (Rough-Cut)Book Review: Awesome stories Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book that everyone needs to read and share stories with friends and family. The moment you have this book in your hands and start to read you will not want to close this book and go to do something else. I really love this book. Good job Nam Le.
Book Review: Boring Summary: 1 Stars
I usually like books written by people of different cultures & was looking forward to "The Boat" after reading a glowing review of it in a magazine. What a waste! I couldn't get into any of the stories. Very boring.
Book Review: Boring, Very Disappointed, Could not finish Summary: 1 Stars
I found this book to be very boring and could not relate to any of the characters. None of them had any depth and the stories were very blah. I wanted to learn more about each one, but the author did not provide much on terms of "background" or anything for the readers to go on. I was very disappointed and could not finish the book. I want my money back!
Book Review: Brilliantly rich short stories Summary: 5 Stars
These stories were so compelling i couldn't put the book down. Very authentic, believable characterisations. Quite brilliant at times. Nothing cliched, predictable or boring. Lots of moments of exhilaration for myself as a reader and absolute amazement at how he creates such a vivid, rich story, time and time again. Can't wait for his next publication. Easily one of my favorite books of all time. I'll be passing it on to friends who value good literature.
Book Review: Curiously unemotional Summary: 1 Stars
Nam Le has created a series of curiously bloodless characters. His writing is technically adept, but somehow in this collection he has failed to reach the hearts of the people he is writing about. The story that worked best for me was the first one in the collection, which is also the one that I suspect is closest to Nam Le's life - the story about the Vietnamese father and his son. The others I found unconvincing - cleverly written, but emotionally flat.
In my opinion Nam Le has a lot of writing talent, but may not yet have reached his full potential.
