Book Reviews of The Body Ecology Diet: Recovering Your Health and Rebuilding Your ImmunityBook Review: Fantastic principles, down-to-earth tips Summary: 5 Stars
This is a must read for people who are really serious about healing naturally. Donna Gates has developed an outstanding technique in this book which has won the praise of many naturopathic experts today. You will love this book.
Book Review: Good information, sense a little greediness though... Summary: 3 Stars
This book has some very important information, most of which cannot be found any other place. It's probably not a book you can take to your mainstream Doctor and talk to him about without him telling you it's a little "new age-y". But, if you are an independent thinker and are willing to do what it takes to get well, this book will encourage you and give you valuable ideas and information. The part of the book I disagree with are the subtle hints of how to buy the products BED endorses. I do not believe that you need to buy any of those products to journey to wellness. If it sounds to complicated or too expensive, it probably is. You can find substitutes for coconut kefir and others in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. But this book was an essential piece in the puzzle that is leading my daughter and I to wellness. Many thanks to the author for that.
Book Review: Great book to supplement your other Nutrition research Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this book based on a recommendation from a friend. I have been reading a number of books on nutrition in efforts to feel better. This book includes things that are being discussed in other books such as Ultra Metabolism. Avoid foods that can cause yeast growth, or other potentially allergic foods - wheat, dairy, sugar, yeast. While I liked the recipes in the book, and the overall concept of starchy vs. non-starchy foods and balancing them with proteins and grains. I was looking for that "master list" of foods that categorize them. This part was skimpy and placed throughout the book, making it difficult to find.
Also, the recommended diet plan was difficult to follow and incomplete. One cannot expect to completely change one's eating habits overnight a this book suggests that you do. Also, the recommendation that you need to buy their products isn't helpful. One needs a healthy eating plan that doesn't steer you away too drastically from your current eating plan.
This is a great book to continue learning about healthy eating and how what you eat affects how you feel. I'll keep the book and refer to it, but it won't be my food bible.
Book Review: Great diet, bad science Summary: 4 Stars
First of all, I want to say that I think this is overall a great diet and many people with health problems can benefit from it. It has some innovative components like the coconut kefir and good recipes.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have a lot of science behind it. The symptom list for candida is so long and varied that I would say nearly everyone with any problem would have it under BED criteria.
Candida is a controversial issue and there is little evidence it causes these things. I guess it's not a problem though, because the BED diet can help many conditions that would be misidentified as candida like essential fatty acid imbalance or leaky gut. I am also concerned that she recommends cleansing techniques like enemas and colonics that have no scientifically proven health benefits, but have been shown to disturb and displace beneficial gut flora that the diet purports to build!
Some things just seem arbitrary, like why lemons and not limes? Why almonds and not walnuts? Why black currants (a very strange choice) and not cranberries?
I have recommended this book to people, but only with the caveat that they do their own research on what Donna says.
Book Review: Great for anyone with Candida or who wants to be in good health Summary: 5 Stars
I am so grateful to have found this book. It is putting me back on the path to good health. Give it a go!
