The Book Thief is set in WWII's Nazi Germany. Liesel and her brother are sent by her mother to live with another family, the spectre of being labelled and dealt with as a communist is catching up with Mrs Meminger. On the way there, Liesel's brother dies and it is during his burial that Liesel's alter ego, The Book Thief is born.Narrated by Death, we see Liesel form relationships with her new Mama and Papa, with Rudy her schoolfriend, and with Max, the Jew who is given shelter by a brave Mama and Papa.
The characters are so warm and real that they will live in your world, not only while you are reading. The events so close you could have been witnessing them yourself.
A powerful novel that will haunt you long after you have finished it, The Book Thief is a masterpiece. Markus Zusak just gets better and better.
