Book Reviews of The Book ThiefBook Review: Best I've read for ages..... Summary: 5 StarsThe Book Thief is set in WWII's Nazi Germany. Liesel and her brother are sent by her mother to live with another family, the spectre of being labelled and dealt with as a communist is catching up with Mrs Meminger. On the way there, Liesel's brother dies and it is during his burial that Liesel's alter ego, The Book Thief is born.Narrated by Death, we see Liesel form relationships with her new Mama and Papa, with Rudy her schoolfriend, and with Max, the Jew who is given shelter by a brave Mama and Papa. The characters are so warm and real that they will live in your world, not only while you are reading. The events so close you could have been witnessing them yourself. A powerful novel that will haunt you long after you have finished it, The Book Thief is a masterpiece. Markus Zusak just gets better and better.
Book Review: Absolutely wonderful, the best book in ages. Summary: 5 StarsI read this with two other friends and we all gave it 9 or 9.5 out of 10. Not a book I would have picked up in the shop myself but so glad to have read it. Normally, I only read a book on the train journey to and from work but this is one I had to continue reading when I got home.
It's written in such a unique style, you really get a sense of the narrator looking down on the whole scene.
The characterisations are all so strong, you get to know and imagine and picture every single one of them, even characters who step in for just a moment.
And, of course, it is so very sad in places, the despair and anguish amplified by the feelings of Liesel, the impoverished little girl. But this only serves to make the 'highs' so high.
It is difficult to believe that the author was only 30 when he wrote this. It is just about perfect. Read it now!
Book Review: Different and enjoyable Summary: 4 StarsAlthough this took me a couple of weeks to read I am glad I did and I am glad I persevered. It's not a page turner and between pick ups I wasn't particularly desperate to get reading again. However it has some moving, profound things to say about the human condition and it showed me a side of Germany in World War II that I knew nothing about. The prose is wonderful and the story refreshingly different. Give it a try.
Book Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 StarsI was recomended this book while on vacation in Australia, and what a recomendation. It took a while to get into the way the book was written and how original it was, but by the end of the first chapter I was totally hooked. I can not recomend this book highly enough and if you are looking for something that you can not put down and just something with that little bit extra special then BUY THIS BOOK.
Book Review: Uplifting Summary: 5 StarsA real surpirse. An amazing tale told in an amazing way, you really live with the characters through the whole book. Highly recommended, and a genuine delight to read.
