Book Reviews of The Book Thief

Book Review: Just wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

I've just finished reading the Book Thief, and I must say it is genuinely the most beautifully written, evocative, visual and well crafted book I have read in many years. Perhaps ever. I can't recommend this highly enough - as others have said beware of tears by the end !

Book Review: The Book Thief
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a brilliant book, narrated by Death himself, about a girl and the books she steals in Nazi Germany. The books she steals are all important in that they are all from pivotal moments in her life. It is a very emotional book and I would be amazed if anyone could read it without crying at the end.

Book Review: Beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

This book has seen his fair share of hype and as such, it was with some hesitation that I started it. Also the fact that the narrator is Dead himself, looked to me like a gimmick. But after the first 100 pages, I have to admit that the book is much better than I expected. It reads like a fairy tale, beautiful and sad at the same time.
Do not be put off by the 500+ pages: there is a lot of whitespace, many short chapters and it contains so many emotions that you will be sorry that it has ended.

Book Review: Tragic, haunting and inspirational
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an extremely powerful read. It is a tale of tragedy, loss and inhumanity, but at the same time love, life and humanity.

The wartime story of a young German orphan, Liesel, living with her foster family in a suburb of Munich is told by Death, which turns out to be not the gimmick I expected, but in fact an inspirational idea. Far from being a hackneyed stereotype the author has imbued him with perceptiveness and sense of humour. His role is that of commentator on humanity's lack of humanity, but he also interacts with the story instead of viewing from afar.

I think the author handled that aspect brilliantly, but actually the whole book is beautifully written. There are some absolutely jaw-dropping turns of phrase and fabulous uses of language that are still making me purr with pleasure.

On one hand this book is desperately sad, on the other it is inspirational. On both it is thought-provoking and engaging. Highly recommended.

Book Review: this is a book that must be read
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this book haunting, well written and very profound. It is a book that stays with you long after finishing it.
There are some very poignant phrases from death himself and the book is written in a well spaced format, a box of tissues is a must , it is a book that will make you smile ,laugh, cry and haunt you long after.
If you are looking for a present for someone who enjoys a good read then this is the book. I bought it after reading the reviews on Amazon and have since bought further copies as presents. It really is that sort of book.
