Book Review: Ambitious and gorgeously written

I'm dismayed by the way some of these reviews focus on the disjointed quality of the surprise ending. The Brambles is a serious attempt to weigh the larger events of life against the visceral reality of minute experience, and Minot clearly succeeds.
The book pits the abstractions of the family tree against the sensual minutia of everyday experience. The Brambles' perceptions of this experience, wrought in gorgeously phantasmagoric detail, will ultimately define their kinship more than name, narrative or blood lineage. The large-scale revelation at the end seems intended to feel irrelevant in the face of these sensory details. Each member of the Bramble family is asked to step back and look at the larger picture, and repeatedly demonstrates that this can only be achieved through the lens of visceral experience. I found the renditions of these experiences to be both edifying and intoxicating, and was shocked at the accuracy with which Minot conveyed human abilities and limitations.
