Book Reviews of The Brand New KidBook Review: A good book for kids who are a little different Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for a friend of mine who grew up as a Swedish foreign exchange student in a California school. To be honest, she really can't stand Katie Couric from the today show, but I thought she could relate to the story told here. Forget that this is written by a celebrity...also look passed the forced rhymes and awkward phrasing used here, and there. The pictures are great and there is a nice message here...that different is good, and that children should be accepting of other cultures. I love the ethnic mother depicted here, she reminded me of my grandmother, who was also teased in school by having an accent and having lived abroad. I think this would be a great book for any kid starting at a new school, or any child that may be different for any reason. It just shows that it takes all sorts of people to make the world interesting.
Book Review: Adorable Cute Rhyming and a life lesson! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is very well done and absolutely adorable and cute and rhyming with a positive message and life lesson. It all goes back to the golden rule as the message is about acceptance and treating others the way you would want to be treated. The message is simple and clear and the illustrations are bright and sure to hold the attention of any young reader. VERY VERY well done!
Book Review: An insult to teachers! Summary: 1 Stars
I agree with other reviewers who said that Couric's heart was in the right place, but her talents do not lie in the writing genre. Moreover, her book is an insult to teachers. Where WAS the teacher in all of this? First of all, she causes some of the problems by saying that the new student has a name that is "different," but doesn't bother to discuss from where it and he has come. When she asks the others to say, "Hi," they ignore her. Then, while chaos reigns and rains about her, the teacher uses a "voice shrill and tight" and "white chalk (as) her tool..." Boo! Miss Kincaid should not be teaching! She does not resemble the teachers I know. Katie Couric owes teachers everywhere an apology for this horrible representation.
Book Review: Another Celebrity Book Summary: 1 Stars
Katie Couric is a journalist, not a children's book writer. Writing children's books is a lot harder than most people think. Most publishers shy away from books that rhyme, and for good reason. Also, as adults, WE like kids to learn good morals, but children needn't be (figuratively speaking) bopped over the head with it, as in this book.
Book Review: Authors don't write books today Summary: 1 Stars
Katie is a media star and certainly not a writer.
Seems that we, American public are not able to decide
what is news nor characteristics we would want for our children?
Sometimes, I think I am alone in thinking for myself because
"beautiful people" like Katie Couric stoop to nothing
to further their own popularity. Rhyming and writing
can be so important to all of us especially as a learning tool
for youth and this book is a disappointment. Not worth my time..
