Book Review: A Light Italian Repast

John Grisham probably cannot write a bad book - "The Broker" is light and entertaining. It also, however, comes across as the possible result of the author's extended vacation in Italy, replete with language lessons and a lot of dining in an endless variety of cafes. Many quarts of espresso are consumed in the flight of the hero. The first few chapters sent me in search of the nearest Italian restaurant.
Unfortunately, the plot does not bear heavy scrutiny. The hero - who had access to some high tech wizardry contained on a handful of CDs during his Washington power broker days - is given a presidential pardon from prison and sent to Italy to assume a new identity. Why? Because the ever-evil CIA wants to know which nation is most interested in these secrets. They hope that by leaking his location to a group of international heavies (Israelis, Saudis, Chinese, etc.), they will learn something by sitting back and waiting for one of these to kill him. How they would obtain usable info by seeing whichever group gets to him first is not fully explained.
We also have some easily checked factual errors, such as describing the rank of the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency as a "major" (when lieutenant general - 3 stars - is actually the case). The same major wearing a khaki uniform, which went out several decades ago, etc.
An entertaining enough way to pass the time and learn a few phrase of Italian in the bargain tho, if you are so inclined.
