Book Review: A penetrating and disturbing analysis of the Bush phenomenon

This is a brilliant and disturbing book. Far from a mere collection of Bush gaffes, it presents us with the political debate that should have taken place before the election (I mean selection) of the president. Miller shies away from the easy hypothesis that Bush is just a likeable idiot, and finds the inescapable and unsettling truths that Bush unintentionally blurts out in his fractured version of English. Bush himself is no more interesting than any other spoiled, superficial moral weakling, but the Bush phenomenon demands our attention and concern. Only through the unwitting (to be generous) collusion of the media could a man like this be spoon fed to the American people. How this works, and why the presidential campaigns are reported like football games or horse races is a question that yields readily to the penetrating analysis of Miller, our wisest and most illuminating social critic. To miss this book is to collaborate in the dismantling of American democracy.
