Book Review: A Masterpiece

I'm a huge fan of Mr. Kellerman's Alex Delaware novels, as well as the spin-offs. He is a fantastic mystery/thriller writer and he has been able to fool all of my attempts to solve his mysteries before the end, and he does so without falling back on sleazy tricks.
However, The Butcher's Theater transcends the genre of the mystery/thriller. It does have a mystery and it is thrilling, but it is also deeply immersive and moving, emotional and engaging. I have to admit I never concerned myself too much with the situation in the middle east, it seems worlds away and something that is outside my circle of affect, but this book brought the complexities of that situation alive and made them meaningful and impactful. So many dimensions of the peoples and struggles of Jerusalem are explored with objectivity and clarity. Perhaps the Arabs get a little short-changed, but they are far from villainized and stereotyped - each arabic character is multi-dimensional, like all the characters in the book, and their culture is portrayed accurately. Jews are not made into saints and neither are the Christians. Everyone is painted in clear, believable, human strokes, faults, prejudices, and all.
What Mr. Kellerman did was something few authors pull off effectively - he made a foreign land and people come to real life for someone who has no prior experience with the material. Frank Herbert did the same for Ireland in his book White Plague, but he didn't create the depth of character that Kellerman does in The Butcher's Theater.
I am in awe of the amount of research Mr. Kellerman must have done in order to paint such a believable picture of Jerusalem. I could just go on and on, but suffice it to say that this is a remarkable novel. It is clear that Mr. Kellerman cares deeply about the situation in Jerusalem and the struggles of the people there, and that concern comes through in every page of the book. Plus it's just a damn good story.
