Book Reviews of The Celestine ProphecyBook Review: "A Little Knowledge Is A Dangerous Thing" Summary: 4 Stars
This was a page-turner extraordinaire for me! Having read Costanedas "Teachings of Don Juan" - and the sequels until they became more pulp-filler than Don Juan's true spiritual evolutions... after reading Costaneda, it was like Redfield turned Don Juan into evry passing stranger!! But unlike Don Juan it was not just a personal spiritual evolution but an all-inclussive evolution - indeed a pophecy, a clearly destined route to Utopia.
So why only four stars? Here's the thing: Someone wise once said "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". Redfield is pointing us in a very REAL direction! Oh yes! But what of this thing called the spirit? According to his character's mystical rapture on the mountain, we are to believe that our consciousness IS the physical material universe evolving through us. How about this idea: The spirit is non-physical - neither matter nor the time stream and not energy as discernable in physics nor space in terms of physicality. How about the idea that spirit - thought, and let's face it the actual personality, the being - is thrust into the physical universe. And yes it is using evolution to bring about its own evolution and even salvation - but it is NOT and does not depend on the physical universe in order to exist. This spirit in fact may have never ahd to evolve as an ape! Redfield hints at this in the beginning when he mentions science discovering that small atomic particles move when we look at them. CORRECT! The human spirit is capable of acting upon the physical universe and changing it even though it would REMAIN INERT if not so acted upon. Ie the physical universe would do NOTHING but randomly float about or remain relatively still as particles UNLESS acted upon by consciousness. On the othere hand, consciousness could separate from the physical universe and still 'be'! So I would like to point out what I observe to be FALSE or misleading information in this story to have us think that evolution is the physical universe acting through us and that we need ITS 'higher' energy - eu contraire - itneeds OURS!!
But that's not all. We have the manuscript, through each successive Insight, simply spoonfeeding us pop psychology and behavior modification. Psychology has never been a friend of the human spirit - at least not since Wilhelm Wundt showed up and declared man to be an animal and spirituality to be a complete dead end if not utter nonsense. Psychology up to then WAS the study of the spirit coming from the discoveries of St Thomas who had persaonally experienced himself as a distinct personality outside of his body. Psychology now preaches "brain" as the sole source of consciousness and this brain is just chemistry and the chemistry creates the behavior and the behavior needs MORE CHEMICALS! Psychology's behavior modification and other therapies have never been other than methods of controling behavior - a far cry from spiritual liberation. A good - or should I say "bad" - example of this is W.Y. Evans-Wyntz's Tibetan Book of the Dead where he has befriended one Karl Jung givingJungcarte blanche space to write the introduction to the book. Jung, the famous psychologist who was known to have a hand in the metaphysical, spends some 30 pages DEBUNKING the book as merely mind (translate that "brain") excess! So here we have Redfield turning the reader over to psycholgy's mission - a group very busy ensuring that the human race will be DRUGGED from the very womb to the tomb to monitor brain, behavior and chemistry. So to Redfield I say very romantic story about a very important thing - our destiny. You did give us some insights! Then you turned us over to the wolves!! And one last thing - Did you know that a man named L Ron Hubbard has charted a real and walkable route to total freedom and spiritual advance? If not you should at least include his works in your research!
