The Chocolate War and I am The Cheese were required reading when I was in high school in around 1983. Apparently they are still on many reading lists. I remember thinking these were two of the worst books I had ever read in my life, and this was the general consensus of the students.
As a few others have said, Comier's books all seem to have a message that boils down to "Give Up. You can't win, so don't bother even trying." I can see no reason to give this message to kids.
I hated his books so much, I made sure I kept my copies so that if I ever had kids, and they had to read them, Cormier wouldn't get any more money from me.
While I have not re-read these books since then, my wife studied to be a HS English teacher, and had them assigned for a Young Adult Lit class. When asked what the book was about she gave the assessment above -- Give Up. She was actually Booed in the class, until the professor told that class that she was right. Somehow, he STILL thinks this is a good book to give kids.
If you are reading this because it has been assigned in class -- I can only say I feel your pain. Hopefully you have a class where you can give a good critique as to why this book is garbage. If you do like reading, I suggest any of the young adult books by Robert A. Heinlein, such as "Have Spacesuit ... Will Travel".
