Book Reviews of The ChoiceBook Review: Boy meets girl, they fall in love, yada-yada-yada Summary: 3 Stars
Well - I love Nicholas Sparks. He is my favorite author so I have to say this....how disappointing this book was!!! The thing I like about him is that his books are always different - but not this one. It was the typical boy meets girl romance with a little bit of a twist, but the routine happy ending. Being a nurse, I didn't like the decision he made in the end of the story, which was obviously against the main character's wishes. (In the medical world it can be considered assault and/or battery.) Also, the "miraculous recovery" was also too unreal for me.
I am beginning to think he should maybe change his genre of writing. To me, still "Three Weeks with My Brother" is by far his best book. It drives home the importance of family. If you want a Sparks book with a not-so-typical ending, try "Dear John". If you have never read one of his books, "The Choice" would be a good starter. It does leave you with the "warm fuzzies feel-good" kinda feeling, and it makes you want to be head over heels in love with someone, but I just hope he doesn't get into the same rut that so many other romance writers get into...
Book Review: Can we get better characters? Summary: 3 Stars
I thought the book was pretty good. However, I got a good picture of Travis in my mind but Gabby came across as not quite the woman for him. I think Nicholas Sparks could and should have made Gabby a better character. She seems whiney a lot. I didn't get a "warm & fuzzy" feeling about her as I did about Travis. There was something lacking in Gabby. I have found this is a lot of Mr. Sparks' books. There isn't enough depth in some of his characters. Is it the lack of descriptions, maybe, of what? Sometimes I feel cheated out of something when I read his books and it seems that his books are sounding the same as Danielle Steele's were. I stopped reading her because of this. Same type of plots and same outcomes and feeling cheated at the end. The last 50 pages of the Choice were hard for me to get through (won't spoil it for people that haven't read it yet)because it got really sad.
Book Review: Continues to impress. Summary: 5 Stars
The ChoiceNicholas Sparks keeps the pages turning with characters you want to know and pull for!
Book Review: Contrived Summary: 3 Stars
I suppose to some extent all novels are a bit contrived; however, there are so many concidences and twists of fate in this book, by the time I reached the conclusion, I felt like hurling the book against the wall. I am an avid Nicholas Sparks fan; he is a wonderful writer with profound feelings that most men are unable to express--and none do express as well as he does. (DEAR JOHN was an amazing love story--even about father and son.) That said: Please spare me the ending of this novel! I was willing to accept all of the foreshadowing and events that had to occur to set up the conflict, but I was not able to buy the conclusion. Without giving much away (stop reading here, if you don't want vague hints), a more realistic, though sadder conclusion would have worked much better. I'll bet Sparks went over this a million times in his head--and maybe on paper--before he actually decided the certainty of the outcome. I think he goofed here.
Book Review: Couldn't put it down Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best by Sparks. A love story anyone would hope for. It's nice to be reminded that miracles do happen! Looking forward to the next book.
